Track Local Gas Prices With iGoogle

iGoogle is a personalized Google homepage to monitor news, information, RSS feeds, and more. Add the Local Gas Prices gadget to quickly see an overview of gas prices in your zip code. I had the gadget added and tested-out in under a minute and it's definitely worth a try.

To use iGoogle, you can use an existing GMail account or create a new iGoogle account.

And, while you're at it, add Young Professional Finance Blog to your iGoogle page also!

You can also get the same information from autos.msn.com if you don't want to use it on Google's homepage.

I've used that service before and it always seems to be horribly out of date (sometimes weeks). I always like to use detroitgasprices.com or michigangasprices.com. They tell you where the best and worst prices are and when that price was submitted to the site, so you're not left guessing. It's also very easy to use, allowing you to pick your city from a list, or search for the highest or lowest in the area.

For those who don't live in michigan or detroit area, you can use the parent site, gasbuddy.com

Since this is a finance blog, isn't the opportunity cost of spending time finding cheapest gas, then going out of your way to buy it outweighs the 1-2 dollar savings you'll get?

Seems like a better way is to get a CC with 3-4% cash back on gas purchases.

Precisely...

20 minutes / week
$30 / hour

= $10 per week in time

@ 15 Gallons / week
$0.10 / Gallon saved

= $1.50 / week saved for $10 in time

This is assuming an individual with a $60k salary. For $30k it's still $5 in time.

Also, that's if you only value your personal time at your working rate...
