However - tell this to people in manufacturing and you'll get a different response - people that used to assemble cars or do manual labor are just plain out of luck. There aren't as many jobs to go around, and even some people who are good at what they do won't be able to find work.
Recessions usually affect the bottom rung of the workforce - not just in jobs, either. Right now, inflation and high energy/food costs are squeezing the low-income worker. Remember, a low-income worker has to work for 10 hours to fill their tank with gas right now, while an office worker making 60k has to work for only 2 hours to do the same thing.
Furthermore, the middle/upper classes are able to take advantage of dips in equity prices, low interest rates, and other "upsides" to economic downturns. The poor, however, do not have access to such vehicles of wealth creation.
The rich get richer, and the poor get poorer.
I guess the only thing you can do is strive to be rich.
